A New Zealand expatriate has reportedly been arrested in Pattaya, Thailand for impersonating a police officer and carrying live automatic firearms in public.

In the early hours of Friday morning New Zealand time, Thai police arrested Robert Malcolm McInnes after he was seen in public dressed in full SWAT gear carrying a live automatic weapon, the Pattaya Daily News website reported.

The website said Mr McInnes was found at a condominium along with several automatic weapons and a large cache of ammunition. A Yellow Humvee at the address was decaled with Thai police and SWAT emblems and fitted with sirens.

After being approached by police, Mr McInnes reportedly claimed to have been contracted to train the Pattaya police on several occasions and produced several forms of identification, some of which was conflicting.

Mr McInnes is said to be well-known in the Pattaya region. He owns several businesses and is a noted martial arts master in the Sir Ge Dorr Kung Fu discipline.

An Ministry of Foriegn Affairs and Trade spokesperson said the agency had no knowledge of the Mr McInnes's arrest.
