2009 Matsushima Kyokushinkai New Zealand Champs;
We (Patea dojo) attended a two day tournement held by "Davies Karate" in Hamilton on the 19th and 20th sept.
With various styles from Auckland,Hamilton,Tauranga,Taumaranui,Hastings,Wellington,Christchurch,Patea,Hawera,Raglan,Tuhoe,Hawkesbay and a team from Australia, there were hundreds of competetors and a packed out stadium both days.
We had five competetors in traditional weapons,non contact and full contact, the first day was kata,weapon kata and non contact. Although me and Sempai Tracey had entered xtreme weapons kata, they had no competition for us, which was unfortunate for Sempai as i beleive she had a "mean" bo kata and would have been hard to beat (even by her instructor). I switched to traditional weapons and managed to get a 2nd place with a sai kata (inspired by Kyoshi Steve's sai kata on utube), in the junior weapons, Haumene Ngarewa was 4th and Waitohu 2nd in traditional. We also had Shannon Moeke,who has two months training enter the non contact, compete against a blackbelt and just lose, a great display of the "bushido" spirit.
The 2nd day was fullcontact "knockdown" karate, Haumene Ngarewa won his first fight to a boy twice his size in u11 boys, but lost a close second fight to the evential winner Primo Davies, Waitohu Ngarewa "dropped" two opponents to go through to the finals and win the u13 girls,and Sempai Tracey fought in the senior womens open, beating an Australian fighter and facing our daughter Shihan Ngarewa in the finals, this much anticipated fight was a tough encounter, but the the day went to the "oldies", Sempai tracey now holds the NZ title for lightweight womens open.
